Description
A high-performance bodied bitumen paint for the anticorrosive protection of the underwater hulls of canal boats. This five-litre single pack ‘blacking’ can be used to maintain coal tar epoxy coatings which are no longer available. The coating has good abrasion resistance, flexibility and weather resistance. It has easier application properties and longer life compared to normal bitumen paints and provides protection against moisture ingress, in both fresh and saline water.
Store in dry, cool conditions and protect from frost. Flash point: 23-60?C. Must be mixed thoroughly, preferably by using a mechanical agitator, before use. Only apply in good weather conditions.
Drying times: (applied to 85 microns DFT)
Dust free: 1hr (10?C), 30 min (20?C), 20 min (30?C)
Hard dry: 3hr (10?C), 1hr (20?C), 45 min (30?C)
Overcoating (min): 24hr (10?C), 16hr (20?C), 12hr (30?C)
Launch time at 10oC: minimum 48 hours after applying final coat.
Surface preparation:
-New work: ideally blast clean to Sa2½ (ISO 8501-1:2007), surface profile 50-75 microns, taking care to avoid ‘polishing’ the steel surface.
-Refurbishment: pressure wash to remove all contamination. Prepare any bare metal areas by suitable means to minimum St2 (ISO 8501-1:2007) standard taking care to avoid ‘polishing’ the steel surface. Bare areas should be patch primed before full coating.
-All surfaces to be coated should be dry and cleaned as necessary to remove all oil, grease, salts, weld flux or other contamination
Application methods: Airless spray – output fluid pressure at tip 2000-2400 psi, Tip Size 15-19 thou. Brush & roller – multiple coats may be necessary as film build may not be achieved. Small amounts of No.3 Thinner may be required to ease application.
